OPTICDROP FOR iOS · RECEIVING REQUIRES THE APP; SENDING HAPPENS IN A BROWSER OR DESKTOP APP
01How a transfer works
OpticDrop moves a file from one screen to another camera. You always need two devices: something showing the code, and the iPhone reading it.
- 01On a computer, open opticdrop.app/send — nothing to install.
- 02Choose a file. The page starts playing an animated colour code.
- 03In the app, tap Start receiving and point the camera at that screen.
The iPhone receives. It cannot send. That is a property of the optical channel, not a limitation we chose — a camera can only look at a screen.
02The code won't decode
In order of what to try first:
- ·Get closer. The code should fill most of the viewfinder. 30–50 cm from a laptop screen is about right.
- ·Hold still until focus locks. The app tells you when it has locked. Progress barely moves while it is still hunting for focus.
- ·Turn the sending screen's brightness up, and tilt it so no lamp or window is reflecting off it.
- ·Clean the camera lens. A fingerprint smears exactly the fine detail the code is made of.
- ·Don't photograph a photograph. A code shown on a phone screen and filmed by another phone loses too much detail. Send from a computer monitor.
Progress can pause and then continue — that is normal. The encoding is designed so that lost frames are simply re-sent; you never have to start over.
03Where did my file go?
Received files land in the Files tab inside the app, and are also reachable from the iOS Files app under On My iPhone → OpticDrop.
Clearing transfer records in Settings removes the history list only — it does not delete the files themselves.
04Free tier and Pro
Files of 1 MB or smaller always transfer at full speed, free, forever.
For larger files you get a number of full-speed transfers to try out. After those, large files still transfer — at a reduced speed. Nothing is ever blocked. Pro removes the speed limit.
Purchases, renewals, cancellations and refunds are all handled by Apple. Manage or cancel a subscription in iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions. For a refund, use reportaproblem.apple.com — we have no ability to issue one.
Already paid but the app doesn't show it? Tap Restore purchases in Settings, using the same Apple ID.

Email [email protected]. It reaches a person.
To get a useful answer faster, include your iPhone model, iOS version, the app version (Settings → About → Version), what you were sending from, and roughly the file size.
